This Facebook marketing tip relates to the official pages marketing tool in Facebook. For clarification on where this tip fits into the greater Facebook marketing picture, please view our post Facebook Foundations: Facebook’s Marketing Tools Explained.
Are you aware that as a page administrator, you can change the tab that visitors land on when they first come to your page by default? This is what Realtors Fran and Rowena have done and can be a useful tool in both persuading visitors to like your page, and promoting your business to your page visitors.
If you set up a page and don’t change any of the default settings, visitors to your page will land on the wall tab. However, with a simple settings change, you can have visitors arrive at any of the default tabs that come with your page – the info tab, for example. This might be useful if you want page visitors to learn a little bit more about your business. The information that appears on the info tab can be edited by you to promote your business. Or, you could select the notes tab as the default tab and pre-populate it with client testimonials, or maybe a blog post. So, why not beef up your info tab or notes tab, and have it be what people see when they arrive at your page?
To modify the settings that control this functionality, first, go to “edit page” (below the page photo) then:
- Select Manage Permissions
- Modify the Default Landing Tab pull down menu to be “Info” (or any of the other pages that appear in the pull down menu)
- Save Changes
That’s it. Now when visitors view your page they will be taken to the info tab.
Important to note is that once people like your page, on return visits, they will be routed directly to the wall tab. The default landing tab is only for visitors who don’t already like your page.
This tip deals with setting the landing tab to be one of the default tabs that come with your page. There is also the ability to set a custom tab as the landing page. Custom tabs are created by installing applications on your page. One of those applications is called Static FBML. Once installed, the Static FBML application lets you create a fully customized tab that you control the message and branding on (see example of this at Pixel Coaching’s Facebook page with our Engage tab, and our Dec Tip A Day Tab). Future Pixel Coaching tips will further address this more complex process.
Do you have a default tab set as your landing page? Why or why not?
